Salam Mr Red1,
I just start my new job in a very new set up company. Based on the meeting I’ve attended with all BOD, this company will become a big petroleum company in a short while because they got a well plan strategy towards that. For ur info, I m the first staff hired here. I am an admin officer. I m directly reported to Chief Operation Officer (COO). I’ll do a wide spectrum work.
As I red ur resume sir and part of this forum, I knew that u r experience in admin part as well as technology part of the organization. So that, I would like to ask ur kindness to share me ur opinion.
1) What do u think of being working in a very new set up company? Will I grow faster since for the time being, I did almost every admin part. Only after company expanded, admin part will be divided into some departments.
The CEO also ask me to look around the HR system, admin system and some other admin part system that can be suggested for the company’s admin. What is the appropriate system that u would like to say sir? I mean, not the technology system of them but the operation system. *wink* |

Congratulations Nurul on your new challenging appt.
Ok, i understand your query. Y dont u tell your own thinking first? Its a bigger challenge to express your thinking before the doing, and asking for other tots. Then we can iterate from there. There is no 100% correct answer.
Much advice on your issue can of course come from books out there. Thats no longer enuf. U have to develop your own thinking and approach. Better start now. |

My own thinking first?
I feel happier here becoz I can see how far I might go, InsyaAllah. I can see how does the company start from the scratch. One day, after the company berdiri megah, I can be proud of myself of being part of their development engine *wink*. Eventhough many people do not know it but I know. Actually, I m not even an experience in admin. I just do it n move on.
Ok. I'll start with some theory from the books out there and apply my own thinking and approach to the theory concept. So that u may got some pic of my condition n we can iterate from there.
Thank you for your promptly reply. |

Salam sir,
As I mentioned, the above nurul is me. It derived from "Nurul Azan".
HeiTech Padu called me for an interview.
I m happy here, in my current oil & gas company, with supportive bosses (sometimes they scolding). They said, it is important for me to be competent. That's why they scold sometimes. I do understand. I learnt many management skills. I can see the development of myself as well as the company. Eventhough, actually, I cried last week in surau because of my poor performance.*sigh*
So sir, shall I go for HeiTech Padu? Which provide more salary n different skills (programming skills) which is also my field (since I m a holder of BSc (Hons) Business Computing).
I m heading to Business Computing field. It is a hybrid field. Now, I m in management part without computing skills development. If I go for HeiTech Padu, the other way aroud will happen to be. What do u think sir? |

Hi Nurul Azan,
First, u shouldnt make the salary as the criteria at all. Its misleading and may not create for u a long term career development value.
You have to consider your weaknesses first then your strengths.
Computing skills is very valuable but very dificult for those who have no passion and intuition for it.
Management exposure and people skills are more fitting for females psychologically and in good demand in the industry. But how serious and confident are u in due time?
If HiTech Padu is said to be a good company, is it such that they are too dependent on the Govt? Is that a weakness or they have good scoring plans?
Is the present Oil & Gas company offering u better terms such as true exposure to ppl handling and project management skills as well as wide exposure to diverse challenges?
Same time, do u have further studies plan? HiTech Padu may be more stable and less demanding for u if u intend to spend time quietly studying instead of struggling around.
Ask your seniors in both places what can u hope to be in 5 years time if u are there.
My final answer if its me, may depend mostly on the type of mentors, seniors and peers u face in those companies. Its people that can make u better, not jobs. And often than not, its people who recommend u further, not your resume.
But whatever decision u make, dont be afraid to make mistakes. Be thankful for whatever it takes. |
