Please help me with re-installing compiere...I am getting a strange error when I runsetup and can't figure out why.

I had to reinstall a stable version of linux (I was running a beta version) and everything worked fine (Fedora Core 4 installed, Oracle installed, tnsping works, but when I run RUN_Setup, every checks out until it gets to Database Server, then I get an error that says "Error Database Port". I get the same error whether I run compiere setup as root or oracle. If you want to ssh into it, it has the same IP address and passwords (legacy400 for root/system and oracle for oracle) as the old build of the server. See below for the log. You will see that tnsping finds the database/server/port so I don't know what the problem is. The firewall is turned off and SELinux is in warning mode (doesn't do anything, just show messages):

SOME HOW THE INSTALLATION IS MISSING A REQUIRED INITTSH1.ORA FILE, I TRIED TO CREATE IT MANUALLY , BUT STILL ORACLE REFUSES TO MOUNT THE DB, NEED TO INVESTIGATE FURTHER, I NEED SOME MORE TIME TO SOLVE THIS THING .

Okie guys, Finally found the real problem in the oracle.

1. Lessons:
When oracle been installed on unix consoles , REMEMBER***** to give the oracle SID in capital letters. Also REMEMBER , Unix terminals are case sensitive.

2. The Problem:
When the oracle was installed the sid given was 'tsh1' <---- (note all lower case). I would say this is a bug in oracle , bcoz by default oracle treats all tables , and objects in CAPITAL letters. Sooo , what happened is , it created the object TSH1 (<--- in CAPITAL) , but created the files as tsh1 (<--- in lower case). (Actually when i looked into the files i noticed both files, some with upper case and some with lower case, i dont understand what procedure they are following, anyhow.)

3. Further down:
When the database was created , oracle created the environment variable ORACLE_SID which is pointing to TSH1 (<--- in UPPER CASE) . but in reality, there is no such SID, since when installing the given name was tsh1 (<-- lower case). so when ever i tried to mount the database it failed.
And give me some unknown reasons rather than the real problem. So i was cracking my head to modify the init.ora parameters based on the nasty error messages the oracle log was throwing.

4. The Solution:
Finally i did a simple thing , that solved all of the problems and showed me the light. The thing i did is....

ORACLE_SID=tsh1;export ORACLE_SID

This command changed the oracle's system variable and showed oracle frm where to initialise the database. and i did a few queries , login to sql , all testing stuffs , everythg works fine after tht simple command. (NOTE** the lower case SID name in the command)

5. The Better Approach:

The command i did is a temporary solution. If u want i can make this changes to the SID permanent. But my suggestion on this is delete the database name tsh1, and recreate another instance with a ALL CAPS name. so tht we don have to worry about where to give lowercase where to give uppercase.

i did not try the compiere run_setup for oracle detection in that server. But i believe it should work now if u try with a lower case 'tsh1'.

Do ask me if you had any further questions on this.

Cheers...
--Suresh

I thought I was careful about the case of everything the first time I installed it (definately didn't when I reinstalled it). Thanks for the help and I will delete and recreate the DB next week when I am back in the office.

Suresh-
So I tried to install properly on my home PC (using uppercase TSH1) and I still get the same error from Compiere. It's not that important, but I always like to make sure I can duplicate solutions. I tried setting the SID as you describe and let's me login to SQLPLUS, but compiere still gives me the same error on port 1521. Is there anything else I can do?

Note that I had to still set the SID variable even though I properly named the database. Is there a configuration file where the SID is normally set? Perhaps the whole file is missing and that is what is causing these other configuration problems. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Rich

I wonder if it still ask u for the user/pass to login into the DB during SQLPLUS, which is similar to what i find happening in windows here when i m logged on. I have to logout internet to let the login or a DB import export to work without asking again for the pass. This is making me ponder over ports in use.

Its like the Listener is been held up by the web port.

On a more direct SID note, i believe there is a compiere.properties file in the root of Compiere2 that u can look at. But sometimes erasing them is better to redo the RUN_Setup.

Will talk to Suresh again later. Already SMS him this morning.

Yes, u can delete and recreate the DB instance, as it is not a live system.
Just update here whatever u do, so that we know.

This is just another Butterfly Effect Wink

Hi red1,

I'm not gonna recreate the db. I made the SID variable as a permanent setting. And it works fine for my sql plus connections.

Hi Richie,

U mentioned to me , that u managed to connect to sql plus also, but still ur compiere can not connect. i think it is becoz of the lsnrctl start was not issued. we really need to monitor this db, i dono how the lsnrctl stops/crashes. Anyhow i started the lsnrctl now , i think now everythg should be ok , test and let me

I think I issued lsnrctl start (always before dbstart). And yes, I was able to get into SQLplus once I made the oracle_sid= command, but still was not able to access port 1521 (when I ran compiere setup). Is there a way I can test this port? I will try using quantum to see if I can connect that way.

And feel free to recreate the db or make any other changes (just note them please). The server is in test at the moment. When it works, it will be the production server.

I hit the above error after getting into server via XStart from Netsarang. I wonder if its due to not setting the XWindows properly. Suresh asked me to do XClock, but I forgotten, hope to post here the exact steps to accomplish that. Will follow up later. Got a classroom of kids to handle now.

Suresh told me that su - oracle will need to refresh the xterm so i relogin as oracle user instead of root this time and then RUN_setup.

Now the Setup Dialog opens.... some green lites then a red lite:

java.net.BindException: Permission denied
Not correct: Web Port = 80

Now the port error seems to carry an earlier prompt:

OK: Database Server = server1.hutzlerco.com
Open Socket server1.hutzlerco.com/192.168.1.10 on 1521: Invalid argument or ca
nnot assign requested address
Not correct: DB Server Port = 1521
Error Database Port
(Not correct: DB Server Port = 1521)

According to suresh, the TNS name shuld drop out after the DB server name, which it doesnt now.

Now, the dialog box loads from CompiereEnv.properties of Compiere2. So perhaps checking that properties file can throw some more clues.

Also is this the 252d Compiere2 version? Cos in mine, the TNS field name is not in use or needed. I wonder if its only for Windows, but Rich can just check if he got the 252d version.

It took almost an hour to get to each field needed and finally even toh i got tsh1 into the TNS and SID fields, i still got the not correct DB port 1521.

I m suggesting to create Oracle in that 'compiere' be used as SID name. I have always been using that. Not meant to impose, but i really dont know if namesake can be a potential issue, thus i factor off these issues by sticking to compiere/compiere/compiere naming for SID/user/pass as stated in compiere.org.

Hi richie,

Some forums talks abt the jdk version with FC4 may be a problem, can u try install jdk1.5 and change the java home and test with run_setup ?

don't use the rpm installer , install using the bin installer,

refer this website for details

but beware that Compiere is based on older JSDK and can have deprecated methods, but they re easily resolved if need be.

Compiere setup doesn't like Java 1.5. I get the following error:

Error Java Home
(Wrong Java Version: Should be 1.4.2)

But I trick setup by changing the directory in the setup to be the old java directory even though I have JAVA_HOME pointed to 1.5. This seems to let setup work and I get all checks.

Hmmm this is a complicated problem then,
It is not advicable to force compiere to work under JDK 1.5 ,

The other option is either disable SELinux or modify itz policy files to let java create network connections.

SELinux is running only in warning mode. Feel free to disable. How is this done?
