Oracle offers a free 10g version

I think this is a interesting news especially for small to medium size compiere installations.
Oracle offers a so called 'Express Edition' of the 10g DB for free. ... index.html

It has some limitations: DB size up to 4GB, one processor, 1GB memory but that's all.
It seems to be the better choice than the embedded licence because you are not restricted to the use of the compiere api.

Best regards,

Does anyone know if Compiere runs on this free database?

Compiere stored procedures were initially coded in PL/SQL, but since version 2.5.2, Compiere developers moved all PL/SQL to either the client or to Java stored procedures (PL/JAVA aka SQLJ). Oracle XE does not support PL/JAVA. jjanke said:

The [Compiere] distribution has old (discontinued) PL/SQL as
placeholders to be replaced with SQLJ - which fails to
import in XE. Assuming that PL/SQL is available [in Oracle XE], we need
to "re-instate" the discontinued PL/SQL.
So it [Compiere with Oracle XE] "sort-of" works - there are errors in payment
allocation and calculation of open amount, which were not
fixed in the discontinued PL/SQL code.
